Alternageek Episode 28: Vista Is Still Icky

Another great podcast, thanks for the tip of the Flickr API, I think I should be able to hobble something together to download the photos to my frames. I’ll report back as I progress.

I also used Windows Vista back with the RC1. I still really like Windows 2000 the most out of all the Windows, and that is what I run on my work laptop everyday. I never liked the XP “fisher price” interface, but it’s very stable. I don’t have many computers that I want to put something like Vista on due to the resource usage. I have installed Windows 2008 Server in a VM and I like it better than Vista. You can install just the core OS without the gui too, plus you get the powershell command line by default. All very similar to Linux.

Now to figure out if I can make a Super Chumby!

Glad we could help with the Flickr API. We will be waiting to hear what you come up with.

A Super Chumby would be awesome! I would love to see someone actually do that for a project.

Thanks for listening and thanks for letting us know about your project!

    Great show!!

I work in edu and we have been a full Vista/OfficeO7 since Aug.07. It was great to hear a review that objective. We have not had any issues at all with Vista. However we are not running any legacy software, hardware or peripherals. 300 of our machines are 1.6 with 512ram and I have not had any speed complaints. (yet)

I do agree with Linux Chick, if XP is working fine for you, there is no real need to upgrade. We upgraded because of the technology mission of the school.

I personalty am running Vista in Virtualbox on Ubuntu 7.10, because we too are an Exchange07 shop

I will be switching to my new system a x60 tablet with the same configuration, compiz is just fun on a tablet.

The Ubuntu popularity is just exploding! I will be offering it to our students as an alternative to Vista starting next week.

Looking forward to your cast. I am curious on your Vista opinion. BTW: Check the AG site with your Touch, the comment box is damn small :)

I don’t seem to have a problem viewing the site with my iPod. The optimized theme is displaying the comment box as well as the post quite nicely- you can see the screenshot that I took with your comment and the comment box on the iPod Touch at Alternageek: Comment Box Screenshot.
Are you using an iPod or iPhone to view the site or a different mobile device? I am curious as to why the mobile theme would not display correctly for you.

First of all a big thanks on your commitment to TEST something instead of repeating RSS feeds !

I commented before I am curious on the “Vista” topic and now finally heared the cast.

Just two points: Testing is ok, but cramping Vista in a 512MB virtual machine ? 1GB or over …
And than we speak of Vista. Had you Aero on ? I don’t think Virtual Machines are very good at emulating current 3D cards.

And when it comes to price and “the demands are on the label”.
At least here in Europe one can buy the System Builder version, which is way cheaper. When it comes to the “label”. Ever tried lately to play an actual game with the suggested minimum configuration that’s stated on the package ?

If you like more discussion feel free to contact me via LJ or Vox (or write a mail).

Although the critic above - still a great, entertaining podcast I am really eager to hear the next episode.

    Keep going !

    Good show!

As a Lego junkie, just wanted to point out that MindStorms still exists as MindStorms NXT.

Thanks for the MindStorms info and link! I’m glad they still have them available. Always thought it would be awesome kits for children and adults. Thanks for the comments and thanks for listening.
