AlternaGeek Episode 12: Browsers & RSS Readers
Category: AlternaGeek Podcast, PodcastsAlternaGeek.com Podcast, Episode 12 for the week of August 27h, 2007
Featuring Linuxchic, Code Ninja and TechMonkey.
We are talking browsers and RSS feed readers this episode. On the browser front we go over Firefox (and our feelings of latest releases, flakiness and Flash), Opera (with it’s widgety goodness), Flock (social networking integration), Safari, Konqueror, w3m, lynx, links, Camino and Epiphany. Linuxchic issued a little homework assignment to get the boys testing out RSS feed reader software. We discuss what we liked and what we didn’t on a roundup of apps that include: Thunderbird, Liferea, Straw, BottomFeeder, Wizz RSS, Akregator, Snownews, Shrook, Newsfire, Outlook 2007 and Anothr RSS.

You guys can’t even serve your own feeds with the correct content type, so how are we supposed to take your critique of feed readers seriously?
Thanks for your comment. It would be helpful if you could let us know what issue you have encountered with our feeds. We have many listeners that have subscribed to our feeds and we have not heard of any issues thus far. Please provide a little more detail and we will gladly look into this for you.
Hmm, feeds seem to work fine for me…I must be doing something wrong
I am going to assume the comment was directed at the way WordPress sets content type to text/xml rather than application/rss+xml. Typically this doesn’t cause an issue for most readers. Perhaps you should put in a request to the WordPress developers to have this default changed in future releases as this would affect all WordPress users. Additionally, if you are browsing the content type of the feeds, you have knowledge of the workings of RSS. Perhaps next time you could offer suggestions rather than a hit and run.
Sage is also a neat “plugin” for FF. I used it before I found Google Reader
Only drawback I remember it doesnt’t store read/unread markings - but this might have changed in the current version.
Good podcast as usual - Alternageek is in my weeks podcast list. It’s fun having a podcast which one could follow since day #1.
