Digg Alternatives
Recently I have seen a lot of sites popping up here and there that build on the Digg concept but have more specialized topics or just a different way of doing things. Some are new, some not so much but all are fun to explore. Here are a few I have found in no particular order:
DZone – DZone is a free link-sharing community for developers. Anyone can submit new links to the incoming queue and members vote on upcoming links to determine what gets promoted. Everyone can browse, search and comment on links.
Babblz – Women oriented link-sharing, social bookmarking site.
techTAGG – Focused on technology, techTAGG allows users to decide which news should make it to the front page and how it should reach the front page. techTAGG also participates in profit sharing with users adsense adds being shown 50% for the topics they submit.
coRank – Create your own Social Content site, build your own repository abut that topic you like and start growing the network around it for free.
Sk*rt – sk*rt is the place to find and/or link to anything and everything on the Web that you’d like to share. If sk*rt users like what is submitted, they’ll vote for it. The more votes, the more likely your link will make it to the front page.
Streamy – Still a closed beta Streamy’s frontpage says “Streamy is a new way to read and share the best stories on the Web”.
Gleamd.com – Still by invitation only, Gleamd is “a place to highlight interesting people doing interesting things on the internet”. Users vote on people rather than stories and links.
reddit – a source for what’s new and popular online. reddit learns what you like as you vote on existing links or submit your own.
Spotback – is a personalized news website that depends on each user’s personal ratings. When users enter the site for the first time they receive a default page containing a list of Top Stories (best rated stories) from most popular categories in Spotback. Once a user rates a story, his personal profile is updated and Spotback’s algorithms are looking for relevant stories that would match this user’s profile. Each user gets relevant stories that are personalized according to his specific profile preferences which creates a different personalized news portal for each user.
Thoof – Thoof will show you interesting news, websites, videos, and other links, personalized to your individual tastes. Just click on the stories that interest you, and let Thoof do the rest. If you don’t like the way a story is described, just click improve and propose a change to it.
Wobblog – Social news site where anyone (including anonymous non-registered users) can submit and rank sites but the users with the most Karma get the most weight. The Karma algorithm can distinguish between registered users, giving more relevance to those of proven trustworthiness and usefulness for the comunity over the ones that try to commit abuse or fraud.
Kontrib – Social news site that translates articles into foreign languages.
Threadwatch – a community website focused on Internet marketing and related technologies.
BlogsNow – BlogsNow constantly creates an up to date list of emerging topics. It reflects what is most popular in 29,480,236 weblogs right now.
